Introducing TCPix

As Speech and Language Therapists working with diverse communities,

we have often struggled to find culturally appropriate images.

We decided to address this by creating TCPix, enabling others to support choice and understanding in more culturally sensitive ways.

We chose line drawings as they are arguably less reliant on technology and colour printing and they provide an alternative

to symbol sets.

We were fortunate to receive a grant from the Royal College

of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) for the project

and also from community interest company, Small Good Stuff.

The images were created by our graphic artist Angie Brain.

Throughout the development of TCPix we have consulted with

other Speech and Language Therapists, including the RCSLT Bilingual Clinical Excellence Network, National Adult Learning

Disabilities Forum members, colleagues/staffat the University

of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University

and members of Communication Therapy International.

We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to the idea and have many more suggestions for vocabulary than we currently have funds.

Our plan is to continue to develop the picture bank as opportunities allow. In the meantime, please do check out our FREE TCPix Image Bank via the TCPix button above.

We would love to hear about how you use the images and also

if you have any suggestions for further vocabulary/developments!
